There is no place like it, and no matter where you roam, you will always come back to it: your home. If the place is a tad worn around the edges, here are a few suggestions on how to modernise it. These tips will not only bring your home into the 21st century and make it more comfortable and energy efficient, they will lessen the negative impact on the environment as well.
1. Fix the Insulation
An average household spends a hefty chunk of its income trying to stay warm, or cool things down, and some of that money is literally disappearing into thin air. If the insulation in the home is poor, the heater or air conditioner has to work harder and will need more energy to keep the temperature at an ideal level. Fixing the insulation is not only slapping on some fibreglass, it also means plugging up holes and getting rid of drafts. For this, you need to look near the windows and doors. In addition to making the home more comfortable, good insulation also keeps the noise level down.
2. Upgrade the Plumbing Fixtures
It is more than just a few leaks in the pipes that you should worry about. There is also the residue build up, and the heavy metal content from the medieval pipes that you are living with. Technology has developed toilet and plumbing fixtures that are made from impervious materials, or materials that do not degrade in water, such as stainless steel, plastic, and vitreous china. A new boiler should be in the plans as well.
3. Green Energy
It may look a bit silly to have a small windmill right in your backyard, but when your power charges starts going down despite of the rise in oil prices, you will get to have the last laugh. You can also put in a few solar panels on your roof and wait for a really sunny day for that to pay off, or create your own bio fuel from household waste. There are new ways being developed every day to create renewable and environmentally friendly sources of energy; it should not be hard to find one that is right for you.
4. Change the Wires
While on the topic of energy, another way to modernise your home is to change the electrical wiring. The older these wires get, the less conductive they become. You not only waste more electricity than you actually use, you are exposing your electrical appliances to fluctuations and putting your home at risk of fire and other electrical hazards.
5. Throw Out the Old Appliances
If it is about the same age as you are, it is time to get rid of that toaster. This is not the time to be sentimental, this is the time to realise that those appliances were designed and manufactured at a time when the environment was not a concern and the oil reserves were not at the verge of complete depletion.
These are just some of the methods you can utilise to make your home look and feel modern. Not only do they improve your home’s appearance, these tips also help save energy and, consequently, money.
