Amy Poehler Shines in Spring Breakdown

It seemed that earlier this year at the annual Sundance Film Festival, the gloom of the current economy seemed to brighten a little bit with Amy Poehler in Spring Breakdown. The film, although not released by Warner Bros. to theaters, will be released to Blu Ray and DVD format on June 2, 2009. Interestingly enough, the film itself was hit by the economical downturn. It was actually made during 2006 but its release was halted when its studio home shut down.

Also starring in the film is Amy Poehlers husband, Will Arnett. The couple had a baby boy, Archie last year as Poehler left Saturday Night Live. The movie is about three women who are nearing 40 who have been geeks all their lives who get the opportunity to head to San Padre Island to chaperone Beckys bosss daughter for spring break. Parties, guys, and beer is all it takes to transform these geeky girls into partying princesses! The women are down in the dumps after one of them has their beloved cat pass away, another finds out that her fiance is gay, and the third woman repulses a blind man by her face. They decide that they really need some pampering away from all of the drama that surrounds them at home.

Apparently the film had been tossed around for a while after the Warner Independent Studio closed, but eventually has been able to get out to the public and will be available in June to buy on DVD and Blu Ray. Warner Bros. film studio had cut production and had streamlined all operations, and it did this by eliminating some of their units like Warner Independent. The company also absorbed some new studios like New Line Cinema during the time that the United States economy continued to fall into a recession.

Spring Breakdown with Amy Poehler cost between $10 million and $12 million to produce, and both Poehler and Rachel Dratch have said that it will appeal to women and those who are gay. Many of the movies that debuted at the Sundance film festival were drab and dreary, and the women were proud that they could offer a film that was more fun and cheery than many of the other films that were presented there. It was different than the typical Sundance films that are often presented, which the women were also proud of. The Sundance Film Festival was started 25 years ago by actor Robert Redford and is the current U.S. Independent film festival.

Rachel Dratch wrote the movie along with director Ryan Shiraki with the goal of making it a broad goofy comedy that stars women. Amy Poehler was working with Dratch on Saturday Night Live when she was asked to be one of the women in the movie, along with Parker Posey. She reportedly did not hesitate to say yes to working with the other girls. You can catch Amy Poehler in Spring Breakdown starting June 2.
