Benefits of Directory Submission

Directory submission is one of the oldest means of organizing information on the internet. If you are old enough to remember the internet in its infancy, you’ll have to agree that things have changed. When the internet was becoming popular, the need arose for some form of organization. The natural, common sense result was to create a kind of directory of websites. The first directories were rather like electronic yellow pages. The categories were somewhat broad, and the searcher would click through categories and subcategories until reaching the requested information - or not. It could be frustrating not to be able to find the ‘right’ path to the information that you needed.

Today, most of us search for information through a keyword search on a search engine. Directory submission continues, though, because searches through keywords still scan the directories for relevant websites. Or, some searchers will purposefully use a directory site because they have had trouble locating the exact information they need through a keyword search. So if someone finds your website through a directory submission website, chances are they will be a prospect for you because they drove the search that got them to you.

But for website owners, there is another benefit to directory submission, the creation of backlinks. A backlink is just what it sounds like - a link from one website back to yours. Backlinks are important in boosting your page ranking in search engine results because the number and quality of the backlinks you have denotes a certain level of ‘importance’ for your website. Think about it this way; if you are looking for a great plumber, are you more comfortable picking one at random out of the yellow pages or contacting one that several of your friends have all had used and recommend? The search engines look at a backlink as a type of ‘recommendation’ for your website. The more backlinks leading to your site, the more your website is ‘recommended,’so the higher ranking you will get in the search results.

A question you might have is, are all backlinks created equal? The answer is an absolute no. Directory submission or other means of creating backlinks should be done carefully so that you are certain you are creating your submission in the correct category, with the correct anchor text, and only in locations that you feel are websites. Plus, you need to generate your backlinks over time. If you suddenly have thousands of backlinks appear in one day (which is possible through some directory submission services or directory submission software), the search engines will consider this a type of ’spam.’

There are three other ways to help your backlinks be the best they can be. First, make sure that your backlinks come from unique IP addresses. Repeated IP addresses will be flagged by the search engines. Second, make sure that you have some backlinks directed to your interior webpages instead of just your homepage. This type of link may appear to be connecting to more directly relevant information. And finally, focus on getting one-way backlinks as opposed to two-way links. A few two-way links are fine for sites that you really want your site listed in, but one-way links will help you more in the search engine results.
