Going back to my main tip; you simply have to know your skin tone - unless you’re going for the goth look, the best ‘natural’ effect will be gained from picking a base which is either close to or matches your skin tone. A light to medium application of foundation is best; you still want your face to look like your face and not a mask after all, and you should also be aware of certain areas - too much powder around the eyes will clump up and look awful, whereas too little in those ‘problem areas’ won’t provide adequate coverage.

Good quality cosmetics will be easy to apply, without clumping or cracking and should provide even, clean looking coverage without blocking up pores and making it look like the face is made of plastic. A good powder application will, however, make the skin look finer by making it seem that the pores are smaller. Smaller pores will make the skin look fresh, but going too far with this will lead to pores being blocked up and achieving the opposite effect.

Some makeup artists will suggest applying any liquid products such as concealer before any powder foundation, and this is a camp I often find myself falling into. A latex sponge is the best way to do this, but brushes can work too.

Providing your foundation is applied evenly and smoothly, you should have a very good base to build the rest of your look on. It takes practice, but following these tips, practicing and knowing your face will go a long way towards making your makeup application a success every time.
