The U.S. government has been asked to have the rules of the Privacy Act of 1974 rewritten. This is because this rule has been used for 34 years by the government to control its secret data. It has therefore been deemed time for Congress to change the policy and revamp the privacy notices it’s been using, called systems of records notices (SORN).

It was suggested to designate the main privacy officers for the main US agencies and to develop a private site where it is possible to access the notices sent by various organizations. At present, there are only a few organizations having these head secrecy offices and even privacy experts find it difficult to understand SORNs.

It is stated that the rules are too narrow, and much more different from the working of modern computers. Basically, the safeguards in the act focus on the government’s using records on paper; however as the government’s access to personal data is now far more than these paper records, changes have to be made to the law.

Act should be modified to cover database searches

Prolonged use of SORNs can lead to major problems as these SORNs are groups of records that are accessible using a person’s name or any other person who has been identified by this person. However, today’s government searches do not begin by looking for a single person.

It is suggested that the Privacy Act be modified so that it covers data mining and searches in databases. This is because the concept of terabytes of data was not in existent at its conception. Personally I think this is moving much to slow, by the time NASA attempts to visit Mars over 100 years would have passed since visiting the moon. I mean space exploration holds the key to life and the key to cure illnesses. By exploring space we get a lot more intelligent.

But will the Ares and constellation program be the future of any kind of space travel? Well it could certainly be, I mean millions of dollars is being invested into it and we all know that the Apollo program had had its day. They need to make a shuttle that is a lot faster. Mars is the next step, but what after Mars? Where do we go from there on? Its very hard to contemplate, but with the current shuttles there is no way that they would be able to go beyond the distance of Mars.

As well as safety most of the effort should be pushed towards actually making the shuttles faster, for true space exploration, something needs to be created to travel near to the speed of light. If this occurs then we are not only limited to just exploring our galaxy but can explore them all. I mean Earth is only going to last a certain amount of years, before the atmosphere changes, so humans need to find another way to survive. Whatever develops I am certain that it will definatley be something of great public interest.
