Learning Expectations of the Net Generation

Sunday 7 June 2009 @ 1:38 am

The Net Generation, more officially known as Generation Y, refers to the generation following Generation X. Individuals that pertain to this group were born between 1980 and 1992, and are children of Baby Boomers. The reason Generation Y is also defined as the Net Generation or First Digitals is that members of this cohort came of age during the digital revolution.

Characteristics of the Net Generation
Just like any of its preceding generations, this one is influenced by the important events, leaders, developments and trends of its time. Most notably, the proliferation of instant communication technologies (such as email, cell phone text messaging, instant messaging and social networking) has shaped Generation Y’s character as a peer oriented, instant gratification-seeking age group.

In the workplace, this cohort is known as being driven by three core elements. The first one is impact. The net generation cares more than any other generation about making a difference. The second core element that drives this group in the workplace is communication. The new technologies that are ingrained in the lives of these young people have incited a need for constant communication and feedback. Finally, we have flexibility. More and more individuals that are part of Generation Y are shifting toward a home-based work environment in order to further achieve a work-life balance.

The Net Generation and Learning
So how does this group respond to a learning environment? What do they expect? Because the attitudes, aptitudes, expectations and learning styles of the Net Generation reflect the overall environment in which they came of age, they have a much different outlook than the faculty and administrators that are educating them. For example, most members of this new generation cannot recall a time when computers did not exist. By contrast, most professors at higher learning institutions learned to do library research through the card catalogue and the Dewey decimal system.

Fortunately, the gap is not impossible to overcome. Contrary to common assumptions, technology is not the most important component of a good educational experience for these young people. In fact, studies have shown that the Net Generation values the experience and dedication of the teacher, as well as his or her passion for the subject above all else.

That’s not to say that technology doesn’t play an important role, it’s quite the contrary. Generation Y students have high expectations for the technology skills and knowledge of their professors. They don’t only expect their teachers to be experts in their fields, committed to teaching and passionate about it, but they also expect that teachers will use technology effectively to communicate that expertise to students. Students want instructors to use technology in the classroom, but only if they can use it appropriately. For example, students agree that Powerpoint is a powerful tool to help instructors communication information, but they express frustration at teachers who overload slides with information.

Also, students in this generation don’t necessarily want a classroom experience dominated by technology, but rather one that is balanced between teacher lectures and interactive participation.

How to Build ROI With the Most Under-Utilized Internet Marketing Tool

Sunday 10 May 2009 @ 8:43 am

It is ironic that, with marketing to repeat customers much easier and less costly, there is not more information on designing after-conversion pages. Up to 40% of prospects say that they are willing to share additional information after they convert, making this a golden opportunity to not only make pitches for your other products, but to gain additional demographic information about your target audience - free market research.

All invaluable parts of your web marketing strategy, designed not only for getting SEO numbers and statistics, but for getting what really matters - customer loyalty and a great relationship.

If you have ever bought anything from Amazon, you will know the amazing extent to which they utilize after conversion pages in their internet marketing and sales processes. Amazon stores information about what logged in customers have searched for (as well as any searches and product views made in the same session, but before logging in), and integrates this with sales data, and the sales data of millions of other users, to give people personalized product offers after they have converted.

Many web analytics packages can start you on the road to gathering and utilizing this information. Webtrends is a good package to start you off, and your internet consulting agency or website designer can give you excellent advice about how to automatically integrate this information into the after-conversion process.

Even if your conversion is not product or purchase related, the after conversion page still offers excellent opportunities for internet marketing. People are in prime engagement mode with your website at this point; studies have proven that people really pay attention to the thank-you page. If one of your conversion points is downloading a white paper, this is the prime opportunity to offer people more ‘information’. You could promote your newsletter or your webinar with the space on the after-conversion page. You could point to a specific case study or interview on your site that is related to the paper.

For white paper customer’s, sending them back to the home page is unlikely to work, and product-focused marketing is unlikely to work either. Keeps your internet marketing activities close to the conversion action (information or purchase).

These after conversion pages, no matter what the conversion action, are also a great place to either get feedback, or engage better with the user. You could ask for feedback on the site, the product or the process. This is also a great opportunity to get information that even the most powerful web analytics packages can’t get for you - the opinions of people that visited your site. Ask them to vote on a poll that will be published on your site or your newsletter, or give them an interesting game or activity.

Make the most of that time when people’s attention is at its height, and your site will stick in their minds. A dollar spent here is worth a hundred spent on search engine ranking optimization or link building.

Learning Language Through Software

Thursday 7 May 2009 @ 1:43 am

What is language software you may ask? Well we mostly see these kinds of software in elementary schools that want to teach proper English rather than the traditional way of learning through a teacher. It is also the technology that is sold to those foreigners who wish to stay at a specific country so they learn the language. But are these the only reason why they use such software? Not by a mile.

Language softwares are those that are sort of educational tools where the subject is a specific language. As there are millions of people around the world there are also millions of languages. One of the popular languages that many people want to learn is English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, British, and more recently French. This kind of software are normally used at private schools that help you learn a different language, the ones you see on the news paper reading that goes do you want to learn Spanish or Japanese or etc.

It is the sound you hear through the headphone if ever you joined something like these private classes. It is also one way of learning a culture because you get to know how to write their language and perfect your pronunciations of the words. These are just a few examples of where you can find and how it is used when talking about educational. But how does it work?

There a very different ways this software works. The normal way the software works is the listen and repeat. Where, as the name suggest, you listen to a voice that speaks using the English language normally and tells you a bunch of instructions on what to do. An example is when it says the English version of the language and you repeat, then he says the foreign version and you also repeat. Simple enough but it has more percentage in truly teaching you in the foreign language of your wish.

There are also games that are involved in this software. One type of game is the spelling where you learn to write the words and in the process you know its meaning. You also go to the country you are learning the language because what better way to learn then to go to the source.

So you take a kind of field trip without leaving your house. This process is like hitting two birds with one stone because you do not only learn the how to speak it you also get to see their lifestyle. This are both used by adults and children, for the children they can use it at school and have fun in the process while adults buy it and use it at home and through this they have added knowledge to their brains.

As technology is growing so is man and because of this man finds more and more ways to either help or make life easier. One of this is teaching different languages to people without even leaving your home. Many have bought this technology and are quite satisfied, especially the schools and some companies, that they are becoming dependent on this to teach students and workers to communicate with those from other countries. Language software has now replaced actual persons in teaching, this may be good or bad but results are results.

Matthew Stanton writes articles about Language Software and how you can learn a certain language through an available software. Simply visit this site for information at http://www.alleducationalsoftware.com/

Learning Math With Software

Thursday 7 May 2009 @ 1:18 am

Math software has now become popular amongst school and universities. Most classes have become dependent on this software because of its way of teaching, it interests and challenges students. There are always new types of software of this kind that come out and each one has a different way of teaching that it arouses the inner interest of persons when it comes to solving calculations. But is this a good way to teach?

Technology is growing at an alarming rate, there so many things being invented by man to make mans life a bit easier. But is this dependency going to have a good outcome for us? Computers are one of the most convenient inventions that it is now part of our daily life. It is so easy to access that we always turn to the computer when we wan to know something. This include different subject.

Math was once taught in classroom but now you can learn through the World Wide Web. When confused by a certain calculation you can just type it and you will find examples. Some try to learn by having fun so they either buy or download math programs and now that there are computers almost in every household parents are starting to teach Math to their children even outside of school.

It may be good to start children to learn at an early age but there are also negative sides to being exposed to computers because we know that computers can cause poor eyesight and have many bad sites. That is why it is much better for kids to learn math using computers if they are in school.

There are so many ways this kind of software challenges students. For the kids version you go on different adventures like space, in a jungle or even go to some mystical place and you pass each level by solving different calculations, as the level gets higher the calculations get tougher so the student is constantly challenge and having fun. One of the popular math games among kids is a counting game, Dora the Explorer is one example of this and many other cartoon characters can also be found.

For those a bit older like high school they learn more complicated calculations through everyday obstacles or they apply it to everyday happenings. So the software uses everyday events like how fast the car is going and by giving different numbers we solve what time the car arrives, so this is one example.

It challenges the students using math as the medium and we know our own human flaw that inside we love to be challenged. For College student though it is more of the thirst of knowledge because they learn not just one formula through math softwares but several more, some will take time to learn but by using technology they learn a little bit faster.

Our thirst first for knowledge cannot be easily quenched and our drive to be challenged cannot easily be answered. Math is one of the most complicated and at times simplest subjects. It is called the perfect science because the answer will never change. If zero the answer to a question than there is no other answer aside from zero. That is why Math is one of the most basic subjects because it has an absolute answer. But is it better to learn it through a machine or through a person? That can only be answered by you.

Matthew Stanton writes articles about Math Software and how you can stimulate your interest and knowledge in Math. Simply visit this site for information at http://www.alleducationalsoftware.com
