Travel Tips for Czech Republic

Wednesday 5 August 2009 @ 5:54 pm

Located in Central Europe, the Czech Republic is a tiny, landlocked country. It shares its borders with Germany, Austria, Poland, and Slovakia. The Velvet Revolution in 1989 was a non-violent deposing of Communism, and since that time, the Czech Republic has developed into a strong, democratic country.

Starting shortly after the Velvet Revolution, Czech tourism blossomed, offering tourists a great deal of variety. Visitors can choose from concerts and festivals, as well as fairytale castles and historical churches. There are also national parks, delightful spas, and medieval towns. On top of all that, it is the birthplace of the world’s finest beer.

The Czech Republic is divided into two provinces, Bohemia and Moravia, and because the travel accommodations are superb, it is easy to visit any location. You can choose to go by train, bus, car, air, or even bicycle.

The capital of Moravia is Brno, which dates from the 13th century. You do not want to miss the Moravia Museum, or the Augustinian Monastery where the Father of Genetics, Gregor Mendel, was Abbot. The Capuchin Church and its mummies is a popular site, and so is the Gothic pilberk Castle. Moravians prefer wine to beer, and the rolling ranges are dotted with a multitude of vineyards.

Prague, the Czech capital, is located in Bohemia, and tourists here enjoy the spa towns and ski resorts. You can also find medieval towns like Krumlov, and the umava Mountains offer lots of hiking, along with many other sports. In southern Bohemia, which is famed for its caves, you will find many recreational facilities and points of interest, and of course, breath-taking lakes and woods.

Cesk Budejovice , or Budweis to the English, is home to one of Europe’s largest town squares. Although it established its wealth on silver mines, the local beer is this town’s main attraction. Founded in 1895, the Pivovar Budejovick Budvar, or Budweiser Budvar Brewery, sells its beer under the Budweiser name throughout much of Europe. To secure global rights to the Budweiser name, America’s Anheuser-Busch offered to buy out the Czech brewing company, to no avail. For the Czech people, retaining this rich heritage is still a matter of national pride.

It is impossible to visit the Czech Republic without stopping in Prague, its capital. Found in the middle of Bohemia, Prague is offers a delightful mixture of museums, galleries, concerts, and castles. Now considered the Paris of the East, this quaint city has recaptured its cafe culture since the fall of Communism.

Plzen lies south of Prague, and is the second-largest city in Bohemia. Abounding with eclectic architecture that ranges from Gothic to Art Nouveau, as well as museums and galleries, Plzen is a popular stop for tourists. The Plzenske Prazdroj brewery has been in business since the town’s foundation, in 1295, and as a matter of fact, Plzen draws its name from the world-famous Pilsner beer.

Save Money & Space When You Plan Your Vacation & Buy Luggage Online

Wednesday 5 August 2009 @ 3:32 am

From discount travel to terrific sale prices on name brand luggage from top manufacturers, including Samsonite and American Tourister, the internet is a shopper’s paradise. Speaking of paradise, you can get a great deal on an island vacation, pack your favorite swimsuit in quality luggage and be on your way without breaking the budget.

Before you shop for luggage, you will need a place to go, right? From placing your next cruise on layaway at Wal-Mart to getting an “online only” special rate for hotel accommodations, a little creativity and a few moments of your time is all it will take to save you a bundle on discount travel. In addition, AAA travelers and senior citizens will enjoy a discounted rate when making hotel reservations online.

If you are planning to make travel arrangements online, there is no shortage on terrific deals to be had. From weekly specials to discounted rates and last-minute deals, both air and rail travel can be found at a great deal by shopping directly with the carrier.

Once your discount travel arrangements are made, you can use the money that you saved to purchase top name brand luggage. Some of the most popular designs include those from American Tourister, Atlantic, Samsonite and others. Everywhere you click, retailers are eager to sell luggage and promise to do so at a bargain price. If you want to know which companies stand out above all the rest, take a moment to read third-party reviews. Some companies list top luggage retailers, rank them by quality and service and provides a detailed summary of the company and all that they offer.

When you shop for anything online, including luggage, you will probably be looking for a better deal than what you could find at your local store. This is why the internet has become such a successful place for retailers. With a much broader audience and 24/7 customer access, the stores are always open and deals are everywhere. In order to make room for the new arrivals, most retailers are eager to move their current inventory. What does this mean for the consumer? Deals, deals and more deals. Whether you are on a budget or simply want to pinch the pennies that you have, shopping online has never been better. Promotional offers, discounted shipping and reduced prices are just a few of the benefits to buying name brand luggage online.

If you shop for luggage in your local store, you may be facing higher prices for a number of reasons. Perhaps its less competition or the store is not dealing in large volumes and, therefore, is unable to get a deep discount when buying from the manufacturer. Online retailers, on the other hand, have a large customer base and purchase in volume, which means they are often able to get a discount that is good enough to pass along to shoppers. So, the next time that you are in the mood to hit the road, don’t do it without first checking out travel opportunities online. And when you need to find just the right luggage for your trip, it’s good to know that the perfect choice may be just a click away.

Pack Smart & Save Space With Your Suitcase

Wednesday 5 August 2009 @ 3:29 am

If you want to avoid a severe case of bulging suitcase syndrome, it’s important to know how to make the most out of your luggage’s interior space. When you pack smart, you can pack more. Whether you want to save room for souvenirs or you need to take both business and casual wear along for the trip, it’s a good idea to maximize your packing capability.

When packing a suitcase, be sure to roll your clothes instead of folding them. This method works equally well for pants and shirts, but also works with accessories. Not only will folded items take up less space, but they will also suffer less from wrinkling and creases that may otherwise be a problem with traditional folds.

Most luggage features internal compartments or extra zipper areas for storage. You can either use these areas for smaller items or you can leave them available for souvenirs and other items that you pick up during your trip. It’s important to make use of compartments, which may help to eliminate the need for carrying additional bags. With that being said, it’s important to note that overstuffing your luggage may lead to excessive baggage fees when traveling by air. Due to the limited amount of space available, it’s essential that you confirm size restrictions for any carry-on luggage and measure your suitcase at home to avoid having to pay penalty fees.

Most travelers prefer to separate their clothing and their incidentals, such as toothpaste, hair products and other similar items. The best way to do this is to purchase a small luggage accessory with plenty of separated compartments. This will allow for proper placement, organization and will prevent you from having to stuff your clothing into the same area with your toiletries. If you are using public transportation, it’s important to familiarize yourself with any restrictions relating to carry-on baggage content prior to arriving for your trip. This will help you to avoid delays and will make for a much less stressful experience.

If you are traveling by car or rail and are not as limited with the size of your luggage, a softside suitcase will prove to be the most flexible and accommodating for your packing needs. When it comes to preparing for a trip, everyone worries about forgetting something. To ease this concern, it’s a good idea to make a list of everything that you want to take before you actually begin packing. As you place items inside of your suitcase, mark them off from the list and move on to the next item. If you do happen to forget something, don’t worry. Most areas offer shops and grocery stores, which will make it convenient for you to pick up any items that you overlooked during the packing process.

Aside from the convenience of having more room and being able to pack more items, the method of rolling you clothes instead of folding them and using all available compartments will result in less luggage and less chances of getting tripped up by having too many bags.

Choosing The Boat That’s Right For You

Tuesday 4 August 2009 @ 11:22 pm

Now that my husband and I have moved from the Western coast to an area with several lakes, we have noticed the distinction in the types of boats people have perched in the driveways–yet we have also taken note that it is still, as ever, one of the ultimate status symbols to own your own boat.

So it only follows that with different bodies of water, there are going to be different sorts of boats at the dock. Not only is the boat dependent upon the body of water, but it also depends on what, precisely, you want to do while on the water. So let’s take a look at a few types of boats–from basic fishing boats to luxury yacht–and you can judge what’s right for you.

Now, of course, this is a very general topic, and there is no way I can personally cover all the nuances of making this major financial commitment. However, I can give you a brief overview which will in turn get you thinking about which direction you would like to “sail,” off to.

If you are the type of person that goes on fishing trips frequently, then naturally you will want to consider some time of fishing boat. If you have already done some research, you probably know that even these exist in a wide range of types and sizes.

General fishing boats sit higher in the water than bass boats, but they can still be used to pursue bass and a large variety of other species. In general, they seat five people, which means that you should have no problem bringing the whole family on a camping/fishing expedition OR bring your favorite buddies from work for a Saturday “boys’ day.”

They are also made to withstand both salt and freshwater fishing, so you can take this baby virtually anywhere! It doesn’t hurt that they have “trailerability,” for easy hauling.

Sailboats can provide the ultimate experience on a spring or summer day for friends and family alike. This can be practical and sporty, as most sailboats do not require man-made fuel, but sailing takes skill and it can get very, very cold out on the water!

However, it should be noted that you can go sailing on both freshwater lakes and in saltwater bays and oceans, so it’s a great option no matter where you live.

Finally, there is the king of all the boats: the motor yacht. Now, when I say so, I do not mean that the yacht is superior to other boating craft because depending on the types of activities you participate in on the water, it might not be right for you.

But consider that yachts provide living accommodations within, so they are great for throwing parties at the marina without worrying your wife over cleaning the house and doing the dishes. Yachts are typically best on the ocean, though they can be used on very large rivers and the Great Lakes. Obviously they are not transportable, as most fishing and sailboats are.

Buying a boat is a large commitment, but it can truly bring a lot of joy to you, your family, your colleagues, and your friends if you make the right choice.

The Blarney Stone And The Gift Of Gab

Tuesday 4 August 2009 @ 10:51 pm

When I was in the second grade, my teacher created a unique social studies program which engaged us in a make-believe tour of the globe. Each student was given a passport, which we filled with pictures and stickers after spending time studying cultures and countries from around the world.

When we started our study of the Isles of the United Kingdom, I was particularly impressed by the story of the magical Blarney Stone in Ireland. It has a unique story which I have found enchanting–perhaps because much of my heritage is seated in the Isles, but I do believe it is equally charming to all who hear it.

Just five miles away from the city of Cork in the Republic of Ireland (as opposed to Northern Ireland, still under the government of the United Kingdom) lay Barney Castle in the village of Blarney. The Blarney Stone was actually built into the castle’s battlements sometime in the mid 1400’s.

As legend tells us, whoever kisses the Blarney Stone will become endowed with “the gift of gab,” which is the colloquial way of saying they will receive the ability to charm and flatter others.

There are many other legends and stories which surround this magnificent stone, including one that claims that the stone actually migrated from Ireland to Scotland and eventually made its way back to Ireland in 1314.

Its real origins are certainly a mystery. One theory suggests that it had been part of the Wailing Wall (also referred to simply as the western wall) of Jerusalem and was brought back to Ireland as a trophy of sorts during the Crusades.

It is also rumored to be a part of the Stone of Scone, also called the Coronation Stone of Scotland–a gift from the monarch of Scotland. This stone is special because it is thought to be the “pillow stone,” used by Jacob, before he was named Israel, in the Bible.

An alternate version of this tale says that the pillow stone was brought directly to Ireland from the Middle East by the prophet Jeremiah.

Along other Old Testament lines, it is sometimes said that the Blarney Stone is the very stone which David, who later became King of the Israelites, hid behind when he was fleeing from King Saul. Again, it may have been brought from the Middle East to Ireland during the Crusades.

Actually kissing the Stone is no easy task. First, you must climb to the castle’s peak and then you have to lean over backward at the very edge of the parapet. Crazy! Most people get another to assist them to achieve it. But no matter how tricky, I can’t wait to touch my lips to this famous stone!

Leaseback Property In France - The Easy Way To A Holiday Home

Monday 3 August 2009 @ 9:33 pm

Like many others, I have dreamed of owning a holiday home in a warmer climate for many years, and I recently came into a bit of money, so normally this would be the ideal time. However, the economy’s not in its best state right now, and mortgaging or buying a property seemed like a risky proposition, especially if the recession were to get worse. However my family’s and my hearts were set on the idea of having a holiday home, so we began looking into ways that were less risky and came across leaseback property in France as a way of making it possible.

The process of acquiring leaseback property in France can be confusing initially, but the basic idea is that we would buy or mortgage a property that we liked from the developers, and they would then lease it back from us, meaning that the agency was responsible for the home’s upkeep while we weren’t there, and they would also find tenants to holiday there when we weren’t using it. All in all, it seemed like a good idea.

After sitting down with my husband and doing our sums, it seemed that the property we wanted was well within our budget if we went the leaseback route; the money the developers would give us for the lease would almost completely cover the mortgage payments and we would also receive a 19.6% VAT refund as part of the French government’s incentive to boost the tourism business. We realised that this wasn’t just us purchasing a house to visit for a couple of weeks in the summer, it was an investment and it seemed like this was the best way for us to protect our investment.

Finding an agent was an easy enough process of paying a quick visit to an internet search engine when we were looking for our leaseback property in France and there was a wide range of houses available, giving us plenty of choice. Though we were still a little unsure of exactly how the process worked when acquiring a leaseback property in France, the agency we decided on were very helpful throughout, clearly and concisely explaining everything that was going on, making the process as simple and stress free as it could have been.

Now we spend all our summer vacations in our French holiday home, but without any of the worries we would perhaps have had about it during the rest of the year such as where the money for the mortgage was going to come from, or whether the house was safe while we weren’t there; having it leased out to the property agency takes care of all that, leaving us to just enjoy our vacations, which is exactly what we were hoping for when we decided on buying a holiday home in the first place.
