Wood is a valuable resource and commodity that we rely on in many aspects of modern living. It is a natural and renewable resource that is preferable to other non-biodegradable materials such as PVC or steel. The only way to get wood still unfortunately means having to cut down trees, and the large demand for timber has led to vast deforestation around the globe. Although we can’t immediately replace our need for wood, woodworking can still be environmentally friendly if we make informed decisions about the kind of wood we use and the kind of wood we buy.
When you are planning to begin a project, before considering where to go and buy wood, think about adapting something you already have, like an old wooden bookcase that you don’t want to use anymore, or a table that’s seen better days. This is a very environmentally friendly way to reuse wood and at the same time dispose of something you don’t want anymore.
Recycled timber is another great option to consider when using wood. Although it is not suitable for all projects, recycled timber can be a much cheaper alternative than buying new, expensive timber for a project. Look into buying second hand timber, waste timber or timber from dead trees that have been naturally reclaimed.
Locally produced timbers are typically less expensive than buying timber that has been imported from overseas or other parts of the world. Buying timber that is locally produced means that there is transportation involved and also means you are supporting your local industry.
Learn about the different kinds of wood there are to make sure you buy the appropriate type of wood for the right project. Find out whether the species of tree the wood comes from is endangered or not, and whether the country the wood comes from has a good track record of responsibly managing the forests in their region.
When buying timber, keep an eye out for products that have been certified by the appropriate authority. There are non-profit, non-governmental organizations to promote the responsible management of forests around the world. The FSC is one and regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last ten years to help combat rapid deforestation and mismanagement of forests.
Nationally represented in more than 50 countries around the world, the FSC makes sure that all forest managers that are certified by them follow strict regulations in order to ensure responsible management of the forests. Logs that are harvested from FSC certified forests are painted with an FSC logo that makes it visible to all that the timber was responsibly harvested.
Timber manufacturers and sellers will have indications on whether or not they buy wood from FSC certified producers and if so, which wood products are FSC approved. They will also be able to give you more information on the different types of wood they have and which types of wood comes from an endangered species. Nowadays, woodworkers have a great opportunity to help conserve the trees and timber of the world.
