To get out of debt is truly a spiritual journey. It’s not much different from finding the love of your life. When I met the love of my life, I tried everything before I found her. I had been through a series of blind dates, online dating, referrals from friends, and dates through people at work. Heck, I was even married and divorced.
Each attempt was a failure. Or was it? As I went through date after date, I was able to identify the things I really loved in a woman and the things that I couldn’t deal with at all. By the time I met Karen, the love of my life, I knew she was “it”. I was aware of all the things that worked for me.
Finding my true passion in life was not much different from finding the love of my life. I tried everything before I found what I really loved in life. It’s not as if I didn’t have any pre-qualifications. In fact, I was an overqualified. I had a degree in physics. I was even a member of Mensa.
Still, I tried everything. I found myself going from one high-paying salaried job for a year or so until I got bored. Then I was onto the next business venture. The cycle never ended. I began to wonder if there was any way I’d ever get out of debt. I was a cab driver, a weight-loss franchisee, a manufacturer of soft drinks. I even tried my hand at private investigation.
One day it came to me as I was sitting on the couch in my mother’s basement. I was fat, my wife had left me, and I was living with my mom. I could have stayed wallowing in what a loser I was. Instead, the epiphany came to me. I love to teach. The truth is that all of my efforts to find something in life were an apprenticeship to doing what I really love.
If you ever found yourself saying that you loved something so much, you’d do it free. This is your passion in life. Now, don’t ever let that phrase enter your mind again. Replace it with, “I love it so much that it’s the only thing I want to do.”
Once I made up my mind to teach, I only did things that had to do with that mission. Eventually, I found myself teaching on radio and TV. I eventually I was able to double my income. Now, I’m a mentor and a millionaire.
Seventeen years after I got my degree in physics, I discovered I was a teacher. If someone asked me to do something else, I said no. If it sounds like a good opportunity, I have someone in my staff do it because I live my life only doing what I love.
If you are one of those people that has always known what you loved since high school or college that is respectable. Sure, it might be malleable (just like my definition of teaching), but you know your purpose in life. That’s the formula to get out of debt.
