Floods can be very bad and your house can get damage or ruined. It can put inches or a many feet of water in your home and the water can get into everything you have. A flood can bring things into your house like refuse from the sewers, septic tanks, or any other chemical or unsanitary stuff that can be on or in the ground and water. It can damage the foundation to your home causing it to lean, crack, or break apart. Is can also sink into the ground deeper than it was and your house could even cave in or wash away.
Whether a flood comes a water source inside the home like plumbing or a natural disaster that brings in water from outside the home, it can make the floors warp and it they can become very weak which will be dangerous for you to walk on. You can fall through the floor and you can get hurt depending on how far you fall. It can make the ceiling bow down and mold can start to grow everywhere there is moisture.
It can take days to get the water out of your house, especially from a natural disaster flood, which the longer the water remains in your house, the more damage will be caused. When you get the standing water out, you can still have water in areas of your house like in the crawl space. It can be in the walls, under the floor, and many other places in your house that you would not even think about. Just because you can no longer see water standing does mean your home is completely dry.
Natural disaster floods can damage so many things in your house and it might be dangerous to go into. An inspector will have to check out the house before you will be allowed to enter because you can get hurt and there can be things in there that are harmful to you. There can be chemicals, gas, oils, sewage, and whatever else the water had in it. There can be debris from all sorts of things like trees, even snakes. Your electrical wiring can be damaged and well as your appliances and other belongings.
In either case of severe flooding, plumbing or natural, you will most likely have to get a professional water damage company in to investigate the damage and let you know what all will be required to get your home back if it can even be saved. If the water was not in the home longer than a few days, there is probably hope, but in cases like some of the homes after hurricane Katrina that were under water for weeks, there will be little to be optimistic about.
