The battle over sex in the military is one that is decades old. Military sex has fired up countless arguments and debates over things like whether or not gay soldiers are permissible and whether or not pornography should be banned on bases. However, there is another debate that has been caught in the military sex crossfire, and it is the topic of sex amongst our soldiers.

Although the Pentagon has tried different restrictions, sex seems to be rampant among the women and men who are away from home on duty in Iraq. Iraq and the war that ensues there mark a new chapter in American warfare history, because never before have men and women served together in such numbers as we see over there today. Units engaged in combat are comprised of more men and women together than ever before.

While some people simply dismiss any concerns by claiming that sexual activity is a side effect of integrating women and men, others consider the introduction of females into our combat military as a national security issue. Some of those who consider it a security issue also say that it is policy makers who should carry the real blame for the rise in military sex. Many do not blame the individual soldiers for what is going on, calling it a natural urge, whether they are away from home or not. Soldiers claim that they have no one to go to but to each other, and they cannot leave their bases because theyll likely be killed.

Many of the soldiers who are serving oversees also claim that it is only natural for the teens and 20ish year olds to do the same things that many of their friends and peers back home are doing. One anonymous female soldier has even gone on record stating that they can go ahead and try to keep male and female soldiers from having military sex, but she feels that they are missing the point. Her point that they are missing according to her is that sex is what people their age do.

There is no blanket ban on soldiers having sex while away in Iraq, and in most commands male and female soldiers are not allowed to be out of uniform together or behind closed doors together. It is thought, however, that the sex many times happens in the forward operating bases. Base exchanges sell lingerie, there are condoms that are handed out, and there is also a supply of pregnancy tests that may be available oversees, should military sex give rise to such needs.
