OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder is the man under fire this week, and perhaps for a good reason. Tedder, the co-writer of Beyonce Knowles’ recent smash hit “Halo,” also had a hand in penning the new Kelly Clarkson single “Already Gone,” and (gasp) the two songs have gained national attention for sounding strikingly similar. Clarkson, the original American Idol victor, has made no attempts in covering up what American audiences already know - “Already Gone” seems like a reworked version of “Halo,” a hit song on Beyonce’s I Am…. Sasha Fierce album and a No. 1 single on the Billboard charts.
Claiming she’s got nothing to hide, Clarkson recently described her work with Tedder, saying that the two artists “wrote about six songs together, four or five of them made the album. It was all fine and dandy. I’d never heard of a song called ‘Halo’… [Beyonce’s] album came out when my album was already being printed.” Furthermore, Clarkson went on to add, “No one’s gonna be sittin’ at home thinkin’ ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyonce and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re gonna be sayin’ I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’”
While accepting the consequences of this unfortunate incident, Kelly Clarkson asked that her label, RCA Records, not release “Already Gone” once she realized the song was written to the same track as Beyonce’s “Halo.” RCA, however, denied her request, instead releasing it as Clarkson’s next single off her current All I Ever Wanted album and once again causing a clash between the vocalist and her label. While Beyonce’s “Halo” is now (as of July 31) sitting at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, Clarkson’s “Already Gone” is nowhere to be seen, having peaked at No. 70 on the chart. While “Already Gone” may indeed prove to be a bust thanks to “Halo” overshadowing the single, Clarkson has put her feelings of anger behind her, saying, “It sucks, but it’s one of those things I have no control over. I already made my album. At this point, the record company can do whatever they want with it. It’s kind of a sh—y situation, but… you know, you learn.”
She may have gotten played once by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, but don’t look for it to happen again. The resilient Kelly Clarkson hasn’t let anything hold down her colorful vocal career, starting from the day she auditioned for the first season of the singing competition American Idol. Clarkson took a break from promoting energy drinks and cocktail waitressing at a comedy club to try out for the new reality television competition in 2002, and her powerful vocals ultimately won out over America, as Clarkson was crowned the Season 1 victor of American Idol.
The ensuing record deal was enough to thrust this Southern charmer into the spotlight as a bona fide pop singer, and the young songstress made her solo debut in 2003 with the album Thankful, which scored No. 1 on various charts and featured the lead chart-topping single “Miss Independent.” Since then, Clarkson has scored several more number one hits on the Billboard charts, leading the way for American Idol competitors of the future. The beaming vocalist is still a prominent fixture on the mainstream music scene, and Kelly Clarkson tickets are still available online for several upcoming performances by this megastar.
