On the heels of releasing his upcoming album, American Ride, this fall, country singer Toby Keith will be kicking off his very first European tour. Keith recently told the Boston Herald that he was approached by a fan during a layover in Spain while on his way home from a USO tour saying, “This kid came up and told me I was a huge star in Norway. I called my manager and said, ‘Hey, this guy just introduced himself in the airport saying we were doing well in Norway. Is that true?’ He told me, ‘Actually you just scored a platinum album there.’” Apparently Keith had been trying to plan a European tour for years, and now that his latest album, That Don’t Make Me A Bad Guy, is doing well in Norway and a handful of neighboring nations, the singer is planning to fulfill his transatlantic touring plans. Although American Ride is in its final stages, the title track of Keith’s upcoming album has already landed at Number 38 on the Hot Country Songs chart, with more charting singles likely to follow this fall. “American Ride” was written by Joe West and Dave Pahanish, a rarity for Keith, who usually pens his own songs. But don’t worry because, as Keith said to Billboard online, “I’ve only ever done, like, four or five songs in 12 albums that I didn’t write, and this one sounds like I wrote it.” As for how the title track, which Keith says “makes fun of all the wackiness that goes on in this country,” came about, the singer revealed to Billboard site, “They sent it to me to listen to and said ‘You’re the only guy in the world that could get away with cutting it.’ I held it for about a year; it was so different I thought I’d be tired of it. I just left it on my iPod and kept listening to it, and it never got old.”
With the exception of “American Ride” and a few other tracks, Keith and his partner Bobby Pinson wrote most of the songs for American Ride. Among the songs fans can expect to see on American Ride are a balled called “Tender As I Wanna Be” and an homage to the late Wayman Tisdale, the basketball-star-turned-jazz-bassist who passed away from cancer in May, titled “Cryin’ For You.”
Keith is currently in the midst of America’s Toughest Tour with Trace Adkins and will officially start his fist European jaunt in Scotland on November 9. Despite it being his first time bringing a full-fledged tour across the Atlantic, Keith isn’t worried, saying, “The powers that be just came and said, ‘You’re selling product all over Europe, why don’t you do a tour?’ so we’re going over there. I’ve stayed in Dublin. I’ve stayed in Spain…Germany. I’ve been all over. They like beer. They like a good time. They like to kick back and do what they do, so there’s no difference. I think they’ll like what we do just fine.” Get your Toby Keith tickets to see him live today!
