The Internet has changed marketing and advertising in ways that were unimaginable only a decade ago. An entire new opportunity has developed for web based businesses to get their share of advertising dollars as big companies pay website owners to host ads for their products and services.

Anyone can build a website or many websites for very low cost and earn money from them. These websites earn money 24 hours a day by utilizing online advertising companies like Google AdSense and other ad networks.

Of course, there is also a choice of independant advertising opportunities available to website owners but we’ll cover the aforementioned two here.

Google AdSense is an advertising program that allows webmasters to make money from their sites by placing Google ads on their webpages. Google displays image ads, video ads, or text ads on the pages based upon the keywords that are included in the content on the page. When a site visitor clicks on a Google ad, the website owner earns a few cents to a few dollars for the click. AdSense ads are displayed on websites in the same way Google AdWords ads are displayed on Google search result pages.

AdSense ads are the ones you see on the margins of webpages that are related to the subject of the website you are visiting. Google has devised a way to display ads to you that are targeted to the subject matter you are interested in because this makes you a valuable consumer to advertisers. Webmasters are compensated with money for displaying the ads only when someone clicks on one.

Setting up an account with AdSense is free and you can put the ads on all of your websites and blogs. It is as simple as copy and pasting the HTML code that Google provides you. Google pays webmasters for the clicks when they have earned at least $100. Payments are made monthly as long as the minimum amount earned is met.

AdSense is successful because the ads are unobtrusive and blend in with the design of the website and especially because the ads relate closely to the content being viewed by the reader. The web visitor is much more likely to visit a related ad than one that is totally random.

Advertising networks work in a different way. They act as intermediaries between website owners who are looking for advertisers and the advertisers who are looking for places to advertise. These networks offer a wide variety of advertising inventory which can be displayed on banner ads, text links, email, and rich media. These ads are typically hosted on the network’s ad server for tracking purposes.

In order to make money with AdSense or the ad networks you need to have a lot of visitors to your website. Not every visitor will click the links so the more visitors you have, the more chances you will have to get clicks and make money. The best way to get more traffic and start making more money is by updating your website often with fresh original content, images and videos that are related to the theme of your website.

As we mentioned before, you also have the opportunity to offer other exclusive ad formats on your websites which are not part of any network. This may take a little more time to implement, but the rewards can be higher. If you can offer bespoke packages to an advertiser then try to go down the independant route. However, if you are looking for quick money in the meantime then try Adsense or another network. You never know, it could give you some great ideas in terms of click through rates and the formats to choose.
