It is a sad day when a Golden, rich in years, passes on and leaves a family. The joy of having a new puppy can soon fill the gap. However, take some precautions before you rush and replace your old dog.
Dogs being dogs, puppies can be had from any bitch that is a registered purebred Golden Retriever. This guarantees nothing! People who breed these dogs to improve and help the breed and participate in all the phases are usually the ones who raise puppies that amount to something.
This breed is definitely a specialist, but a specialist at many things.
-Bench Shows: Judge Conformation.
-Obedience Trials: Judge Obedience.
-Field Trials: Judge performance in the field, for birds.
Even if you do not want to enter into any of these activities, the Golden will still be your kind of dog.
-makes an excellent family dog.
-makes a very caring and loving Therapy Dog to take into hospitals or Senior Homes.
-is smart and it wants to be involved in your family activities.
I have had 2 Golden Retrievers as Certified Therapy Dogs. They are perfect for this work, not only because of their very gentle nature, but also because the have the look of a “great big stuffed teddy bear”. My dog was actually nicknamed “Katie Bear”.
This breed of dog is NOT for you if you plan on doing a lot of sitting around. He does not necessarily need a tremendous amount of exercise, but,he does need attention and intelligent activities; at the very least,to be involved in your life.
Don’t you sometimes become breathless as such a dog parades past you in the sun? Don’t you really want to have one like him or her? You need to know where the bitch and male are coming from to get this beautiful kind of Golden! There was a young boy who came to a trainer and asked how he could train his new puppy. Apparently this young dog was so shy he kept running under the table, behind the chair, or, anywhere he could go and disappear.
This is NOT a trait common to this breed, and, probably one of his parents was shy. This puppy should not have been sold to this young boy.Actually,if one parent was shy, it should not have been bred. That is the more realistic statement to make here.
Conformation and temperament are shown every time your dog is taken out. Being a very attractive dog, and of a noticeably beautiful coat serves to bring him attention: So let us think about it before we buy or sell a Golden.
