Will Spiderman 4 Be Successful?

When Spider-Man 3 came out in 2007, many thought it was going to be the best in the trilogy and would be even better than the critically acclaimed Spider-Man 2. And when the film finally opened the response was less than spectacular. The film was considered considerably less warmly received than than the second one, with many complaining that they had tried to fit too many story elements into one film. The general consensus about the film was that it was good, but not good enough. However, as production details emerged about the third movie, it became quickly obvious why the third one was such a misstep.

Sam Raimi, the director, had already completed a script for the third film involving characters Sandman and Vulture as the villains, when basically at the last minute producer Avi Arad requested that he use the popular villain Venom instead, despite Raimi previously stating his distaste for the character. Screenwriter Alvin Sargent even stated at one point he thought of dividing the script into two films. In the eyes of many fans, the damage is done, but there is still hope that the fourth installment will be better, as Raimi has promised a much better movie.

Tobey Maguire is already signed on to return as the amazing Spider-Man. Kirsten Dunst will also return as his love interest Mary Jane. The biggest plot element, who the villain or villains are, is being kept heavily under wraps, although Raimi has said he will only use characters created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko from here on out. Many fans were very skeptical about whether a fourth film would be a good idea after the lackluster performance of the third one, but when it was revealed that the studio was going to give Raimi more creative control than he had in the third one, that alone won many fans.

Another factor is that by the third film you could see that Raimi was fatigued with the big budget superhero fare and needed a break. So he returned to his roots in 2009 and released the horror film Drag Me to Hell, which was a critical success. Many critics as well as fans think that this may be the rejuvenation he needs to make a successful fourth film. While many fans are still on the fence about how this movie will fare compared to the last one, many are already expecting it to be great. We will have to wait and see when Spider-Man swings into theaters in 2011.
